How Long Does Invisalign Take?

We provide state-of-the-art dental and oral healthcare to
all our patients.

50+ Years experience in our team

Our clients considering Invisalign have two BIG questions: how much will it cost, and how long is it actually going to take?

The answer to both is, of course, it varies. We’ve covered the cost question in detail on our Invisalign page, so here we’re focusing on the one that often comes second but matters just as much: treatment time.

On average, Invisalign treatment from fitting to finish takes six to nine months. The quickest we’ve seen is seven weeks; the most complex cases can run to two years. Where you land on that spectrum depends on how much tooth movement is needed, how consistently you wear your aligners and how your teeth respond biologically. Here’s what each stage of the journey looks like.

The Invisalign journey, stage by stage

Stage 1: Initial consultation and assessment (1-2 weeks)

Before any Invisalign treatment begins, we carry out a full dental health check, X-rays, and a suitability assessment.

This isn’t just a formality; health always comes first. Any underlying issues like gum disease, cavities, or extractions need to be sorted before cosmetic treatment starts.

Think of it like building a house: if the foundations aren’t solid, nothing built on top of them will last. Getting your dental health in good shape before starting Invisalign protects your results and prevents complications further down the line.

Stage 2: Digital scanning and treatment planning (1-4 weeks)

Once you’re confirmed as a suitable candidate, the planning begins. We use iTero technology to take a precise 3D digital scan of your teeth, no messy impressions required. From that scan, we plan every tooth movement digitally to make sure each shift is safe, effective, and working toward the end result we want. You’ll also get a preview of how your teeth will look post-treatment, which most patients find a really exciting part of the process.

Your custom aligners are then made to order. This stage typically takes up to four weeks, but the precision involved is what makes Invisalign so predictable, every aligner is built specifically for your teeth.

Stage 3: Wearing your aligners (6-9 months on average)

This is where the work happens. You’ll move through a series of clear aligners, each worn for one to two weeks, gradually shifting your teeth into position. For the treatment to stay on track, aligners need to be worn for 20–22 hours per day, removed only for eating, drinking (anything other than water) and brushing your teeth.

Compliance really does matter here. If aligners aren’t worn consistently, teeth don’t move on schedule, and we may need to make additional aligners to get you back on track which adds weeks onto your overall Invisalign duration. The good news is that once wearing them becomes habit, most people barely notice they’re there.

Some patients also need minor refinements toward the end of treatment to dial in the final result. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

How we monitor your progress

One of the advantages of Invisalign treatment at Smile9 is that we’re checking in on your progress every week, even between appointments. Using a mobile scan box at home, you scan your teeth and send the images to us digitally. We review the data remotely, which means we’re effectively keeping an eye on your tooth movement week by week without you needing to come in every time. It’s a super convenient way to stay on top of treatment and flag anything early if needed.

What can affect Invisalign treatment time?

Complexity of your case – Minor crowding can often be resolved quickly. If it’s very minor, treatment can move fast. If there are bite problems, significant spacing issues, or multiple teeth needing bigger movements, it will naturally take longer. Biological tooth movement simply can’t be rushed; the gradual approach is there for good reason.

Your consistency – This is the factor most within your control. Wearing aligners consistently keeps treatment on schedule; falling short often can extend your Invisalign treatment time by weeks. Stick to 20–22 hours a day and your timeline stays intact.

Individual biology – Even with the same treatment plan, different patients’ teeth respond differently. Some teeth move readily; others are more stubborn and need extra time. It’s one of the reasons your treatment is entirely bespoke, what works for someone else’s timeline may not reflect yours and that’s perfectly normal.

It’s not always about the aesthetics

It’s worth knowing that Invisalign isn’t purely cosmetic. One of our patients came to us not because of how his smile looked, but because his teeth were wearing down. He had an edge-to-edge bite causing ongoing enamel erosion every time he bit down. His treatment took around 14–20 weeks and stopped the damage in its tracks. For him, Invisalign was about protecting his teeth for the long term and it worked!

Is the Invisalign treatment time worth it?

In short: we’re of course going to say yes. Not only are straighter teeth easier to clean, which reduces the risk of decay and gum disease over time, but a corrected bite reduces enamel wear and can ease jaw tension. And then there’s the confidence of having a smile you’re genuinely happy with, one you don’t feel the need to hide.

Invisalign is discreet, comfortable and designed to fit around your life rather than disrupt it. The commitment is a relatively short one for results that genuinely last.
