Dental crowns and veneers are a popular way to restore your teeth and craft the perfect smile. Both treatments are highly effective and can improve the way your teeth look and function.

At Smile9, we offer high quality crowns and veneers that help you smile with confidence. We will carry out a thorough assessment of your teeth and oral hygiene before advising you on the best treatment solution for your needs.

Why Do I Need Crowns or Veneers?

If your teeth are chipped, cracked, permanently discoloured, or fragile, it’s worth considering crowns or veneers.

The treatment solution you choose will depend on your individual requirements and the end result you are hoping to achieve. However, generally people require crowns or veneers for the following reasons:

Why You Need Veneers

Veneers are typically used to cosmetically improve the appearance of your teeth. They are usually fitted on the front teeth as these are most visible. Your dentist might recommend veneers if you are struggling with the following:

  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Permanent tooth discolouration
  • Fragile teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Tooth misalignments

Why You Need Crowns

Crowns are typically used when there are more significant problems with your natural teeth and you want to strengthen or enhance the teeth that remain. Your dentist might recommend crowns if you are struggling with the following:

  • Decaying teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • The need to brace adjoining teeth
  • The need to protect weak teeth
  • Extreme tooth discolouration
  • Misshapen teeth

Crowns vs Veneers: What’s the Difference?

Many people assume that crowns and veneers are the same thing, but they actually have some pretty significant differences.
Let’s take a look at what sets them apart:

What are Crowns?

Crowns, also known as ‘caps’, are a metal, porcelain, or ceramic covering that fits over the top of the natural tooth to help strengthen and support it.

Crowns are made to look like your natural teeth and are a great way to enhance the look and function of your natural teeth.

How are Crowns Fitted?

To have crowns fitted at Smile9, you will attend two separate appointments. The first appointment will be to prepare your natural teeth. This preparation is carried out under a local anaesthetic and involves sculpting your teeth so the crown can be fitted comfortably over the top.

Next, your dentist will take a 3D scan of your teeth and mouth using our iTero machine. The impressions will be used to create custom-made crowns that fit comfortably.

When you attend your second appointment, your crowns will be fitted. This will be done using a permanent adhesive to ensure they stay in place for the long term. Once fitted, you will be able to eat, drink, and maintain your oral hygiene as normal.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are often compared to fake fingernails because they are wafer-thin shells custom-made to fit over the front surface of your teeth.

Veneers are permanently fitted and are typically used to correct minor imperfections and irregularities in the natural shape and aesthetic of your teeth.

How are Veneers Fitted?

To have veneers fitted, you will need to attend two separate appointments.

The first appointment will be to prepare your natural teeth for the veneers. However, depending on your individual case, this preparation stage may not be necessary.

During your first appointment, you will also have impressions taken of your teeth and mouth. This is so that custom-made veneers can be made to fit perfectly over your natural teeth.

When you return for your second appointment, your dentist will fit your veneers for you. This should be relatively quick and comfortable. Your dentist will also provide you with oral hygiene tips to keep your veneers in good condition. When taken care of properly, your veneers should last the rest of your life.
