Do you have missing teeth? Are your teeth permanently stained or discoloured? Are you struggling to chew and bite your food?

Whether you’re feeling self-conscious about your teeth or you are struggling on a practical level with the state of your teeth, dental implants provide a long-lasting, natural-looking solution.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are fake teeth made to look and function like your real teeth. Most people can’t tell the difference and with the proper care and attention, your dental implants should last for decades.

Dental implants are the perfect solution for missing teeth as they can be inserted directly into your jawbone via a titanium screw. Once fitted, the bone around your dental implant will gradually fuse to it in order to hold the implant firmly in place.

A crown (false tooth) is then fitted on top of the implant to match the look, shape, and colour of your existing teeth. This results in a gap-free smile that looks natural, functions properly, and restores your confidence.

Dental Implants vs Dentures

Many people ask us what the difference between dental implants and dentures are because they effectively do the same job, right? Yes and no. While they are both solutions for replacing missing teeth, they are very different.

Dental Implants are Permanent

Dental implants are permanently secured within your mouth. The implants look and feel like a real tooth and won’t impact your speech or eating in any way.

Once the implant has been fitted and the area has healed, you should be able to eat and talk as you would with your natural teeth.
In contrast, dentures are a type of plate that sits over your gums. Attached to the plate are a series of teeth that are made to look natural. Dentures are not fixed within your mouth and so they can be removed regularly for cleaning. Because they aren’t attached to the jawbone like implants are, some people find they take a while to get used to.

At least in the beginning you may experience difficulty with your speech or eating as you adjust your mouth shape to suit the change. However, this will only be temporary.

What’s the Best Solution?

The right solution for you (implants or dentures) will depend on your circumstances and individual needs.

At Smile9, we’re here to help you find the right treatment for you.

Our recommendations will be based on a thorough examination of your oral health and a discussion of your requirements. We will work closely with you to find the best solution for your needs.

Is the Implants Procedure Painful?

One of the main concerns people have prior to dental implant treatment is whether the procedure will be painful.

At Smile9, we’re here to reassure you that your comfort is our top priority. We ensure you have the anaesthetics and sedatives available to make your procedure as comfortable as possible.

Many people experience slight discomfort in the form of gum aching after their implant treatment. However, this is normal. We will provide you with all the information and advice needed to help you manage any discomfort in the days after your procedure and as you recover.

Maintaining Your Dental Implants

To ensure your dental implants last a long time and remain in good condition, it’s important to be thorough with your dental hygiene.

We encourage our patients to floss and brush around the implants every day and, if possible, to minimise the consumption of corrosive foods and liquids.

You should also avoid smoking as this can cause discolouration to the implants as well as your natural teeth. Taking proper care of your dental implants will ensure they last for many years to come.
