An overbite is one of those things people often notice for years before they do anything about it. Maybe it’s affected your confidence, maybe it’s causing your teeth to wear in ways you’re not happy about, or maybe your dentist has flagged it and you’re now wondering what your options are.
We’re often asked if Invisalign can actually fix it? In many cases, yes. But the detail matters, and it’s important to understand what’s involved before you decide.
Here’s what you need to know about overbite, how Invisalign can correct it and when a different approach might be recommended.
First – what actually is an overbite?
An overbite is where the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth excessively in a vertical direction. It’s one of the more common bite issues we see but it’s often confused with ‘overjet’ where the upper front teeth protrude forward horizontally rather than downward.
Both affect how your bite functions and how your smile looks but they’re different conditions and treated slightly differently. A proper assessment is the only way to know which you’re dealing with. And how significant it is.
Can Invisalign fix an overbite?
For mild to moderate cases, the short answer is: yes. Invisalign works by gradually repositioning teeth using a series of custom-made clear aligners and that includes movements that help correct bite alignment, not just straighten individual teeth.
Everything is planned digitally in advance, so we can map out the tooth movements needed and make sure the process is both safe and effective before treatment even begins.
When Invisalign might not be the answer
Invisalign is a versatile treatment, but it does have limits. If an overbite is caused by a significant skeletal issue – the problem lies in the jaw structure itself rather than tooth positioning – clear aligners alone may not be able to get the result you’re looking for.
In more extreme skeletal cases, specialist orthodontic treatment or even jaw surgery might be a more appropriate route. It’s not what anyone wants to hear but it’s important to have realistic expectations from the start. A thorough consultation will determine what’s actually driving your overbite and what treatment is best placed to fix it.
Why it’s worth correcting
An overbite isn’t just a cosmetic concern; it can have real functional consequences if left untreated.
Eating and function A significant overbite can affect your ability to bite into food properly. If your front teeth don’t meet as they should, everyday tasks like biting into a sandwich become genuinely difficult.
Tooth wear Misaligned bites put pressure on teeth in the wrong places. Lower teeth pressing against the backs of upper teeth can cause enamel to wear down over time, which leads to more complex dental problems further down the line.
Confidence Beyond function, many patients are simply unhappy with how an overbite looks. Correcting it improves facial symmetry and gives people a smile they feel comfortable with.
What causes an overbite?
For most people it simply comes down to how their teeth and jaw have grown. It’s not something you’ve done wrong; it’s just how your bite has developed.
A real-life example
One patient came to us not because he was unhappy with his smile aesthetically but because his teeth were physically wearing down. His bite meant his lower teeth were pressing against his upper teeth in a way that was eroding the enamel.
Invisalign was ideal in this instance to reposition the teeth and correct the bite, stopping the damage before it became a much bigger problem. For him, it was entirely about long-term dental health rather than how his smile looked. That’s a perfectly valid reason to pursue treatment, and one we see more often than people might expect.
How long does Invisalign take to fix an overbite?
Timelines always vary depending on individual circumstances and the severity of your overbite. Mild cases may be resolved in a matter of months; moderate overbite correction typically takes somewhere between six and twelve months. More complex cases will take longer. We’ve written a full guide to Invisalign treatment timelines if you want more detail on what affects duration.
