Are Dental Implants Worth It? Benefits, Longevity, Costs and Alternatives

We provide state-of-the-art dental and oral healthcare to
all our patients.

50+ Years experience in our team

Missing a tooth – or several – is one of those things that can have a fairly significant impact on you:  how you eat, how you speak, how you feel about your smile in photos. And when you start looking into your options, dental implants are usually the treatment that comes up first.

Then you see the price tag and it’s easy to start weighing up whether it’s really worth it or whether dentures might be able to do the same job for less?

They’re all really fair questions! So, let’s take a look at what dental implants actually involve, what they cost and why – for most patients – they’re a fantastic option for replacing missing teeth.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed directly into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. Once in place, the bone gradually fuses around it, creating a stable, permanent foundation. A custom crown is then fitted on top, matched to the look, shape, and colour of your existing teeth.

The end result is a tooth that looks, feels and functions like the real thing. Most people genuinely can’t tell the difference and with proper care, neither will you.

What do you actually get for your money?

This is probably the most useful place to start, because the cost of implants only makes sense once you understand what’s actually involved.

A better quality of life

Missing teeth affect what you can eat, how you speak, and how comfortable you feel day to day. If you’re avoiding certain foods or feel self-conscious about your smile, that has a real impact. Implants restore full bite function so you can get back to eating normally, without thinking twice about it.

Something built to last

Dental implants are designed to last for decades with proper care. That’s a meaningful difference compared to alternatives that may need replacing or adjusting over time. They feel like your own teeth because, structurally, they work like your own teeth.

Protection for the rest of your mouth

This is the bit people often don’t think about. When a tooth goes missing, the pressure it used to absorb gets redistributed to the surrounding teeth. Over time, that extra load can cause those teeth to weaken and break down. Leaving a gap untreated isn’t really a neutral decision, it can create bigger problems further down the line.

Bone preservation

Your jawbone needs stimulation to stay dense and healthy, which it normally gets from tooth roots. When a tooth is lost and not replaced, the bone in that area can begin to deteriorate. An implant steps in and does that job, helping to maintain your jaw structure long-term.

Confidence

It may be last on the list but it really isn’t the least important issue. A lot of our patients tell us that getting their implants was one of the best decisions they made, not just for their dental health, but for how they feel about themselves.

Implants vs dentures: what’s the difference?

Dentures are a legitimate option and we’d never dismiss them, for some patients they’re absolutely the right choice. But it’s worth knowing how they differ.

Implants are permanently fixed in your mouth and work just like natural teeth. Dentures sit over the gums and are removed for cleaning. While modern dentures are much improved, some patients find them uncomfortable, particularly the upper plate, which can dull the sensation of taste and temperature. There’s often an adjustment period with speech and eating too, while your mouth gets used to the change.

The upfront cost of dentures is lower and for some patients that’s the deciding factor. That’s completely valid. But over the longer term, implants tend to give you better value, they’re more durable, more stable and don’t need the same level of ongoing maintenance or replacement.

How much do dental implants actually cost?

At Smile9, a simple single dental implant is £2,500. That covers everything: all diagnostic scans, the implant itself and the final custom crown. No hidden extras.

If the upfront cost is a barrier, we offer finance from £52 per month, which makes treatment accessible without having to find the full amount at once.

It’s still a significant investment but think about what that cost represents: years of clinical expertise, precision digital planning, high-quality materials and a result that should serve you well for decades. Good implant treatment takes real skill and time at every stage; the price reflects that.

When implants might not be the right fit

We’ll always give you a straight answer, which sometimes means telling you that implants aren’t the best route for you. Certain medical conditions, specific medications and insufficient bone density can all affect suitability. Your overall oral health also needs to be in good shape before we begin, health always comes before cosmetics.

If implants aren’t right for your situation, we’ll say so clearly and talk through what the alternatives look like for you specifically.

What does recovery look like?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, and most patients are back to normal pretty quickly afterwards. There may be some mild discomfort in the days following treatment, but nothing that should catch you off guard, we’ll give you everything you need to manage it.

The bone then needs around three months to fully integrate with the implant before the final crown goes on. It’s not instant, but it’s straightforward and once it’s done, it’s done.

Is it worth it?

For most suitable candidates, dental implants are worth it. The combination of restored function, long-term durability, protection for surrounding teeth, and the confidence of a complete smile makes them the most reliable solution for missing teeth that we have.

The cost is real. So is the value. And for most of our patients, it turns out to be one of the better investments they’ve made in themselves.
