What Happens After Invisalign? Retainers, Retention and Keeping your Smile Straight for Life

We provide state-of-the-art dental and oral healthcare to
all our patients.

50+ Years experience in our team

The ‘easy’ part is getting your teeth straight. The hard part is keeping them straight when your treatment ends.

We’re not saying that to scare you, more to prepare you.  Because as much as we’re all here for that big finish line reveal, that’s not the end of your Invisalign story.

Why do teeth move after treatment?

Your teeth are actually always moving. Not overnight or particularly noticeably but slowly and constantly throughout your entire life.

Things can happen.  A little gum disease can cause teeth to shift.  A tooth gets extracted and the neighbouring teeth start to drift into the space.  Bite pressure changes. Bone density changes.  Something’s always changing in the body and your mouth responds to all of it.

It’s not a flaw in Invisalign. It’s just biology. Teeth respond to the forces around them and nothing in the mouth is permanently fixed in place.

Invisalign moves your teeth into the right position.  But once the aligners come out, something needs to hold them in place to minimise any movement back.   That’s where retainers come in and why how you use them really matters.

Smile9’s retention protocol: what you’re actually committing to

Our protocol at Smile9 is a simple one: retention for life.  If you’re not wearing your retainers consistently, your teeth will move back to their original position.  It’s not a worst-case-scenario, it’s just what happens if you move your teeth intentionally and then leave then to it.

For the first six months after treatment, you wear your retainer 22 hours a day – the same schedule you had with your aligners.  After that you wear it every night.  Not for a year. Not for a decade. Every single night, indefinitely.

It might sound like a lot but let’s think about what happens if you don’t…

What happens if you stop?

We see it incredibly often – patients arrive having had orthodontic treatment years earlier, sometimes decades ago.  They were told to wear their retainers for a year, maybe two.  And they did it…for a while.  Before life inevitably gets in the way and the retainer gets lost or forgotten.

Now their teeth have shifted.  Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.  And they’re back, wanting to start all over again.

It’s really not unusual, it’s a recurring clinical reality we see at Smile9.  And it’s exactly why we’re so specific about the follow up, no vague ‘couple of years’ here.  There is no finish line with retention. In fact, the clue’s really in the name – your teeth will move if you stop wearing your retainer, not ‘if’ but ‘when’.

How we support you long term

The practical challenge with lifelong retention is that retainers don’t last forever, each one lasts around a year before it needs replacing. Smile9’s membership plan is built around exactly this: two check-ups and two hygiene appointments a year, plus a fresh set of retainers every three years.

And for the first three years post-treatment, there’s a guarantee. If your teeth move while you’re attending your regular appointments, Smile9 will provide additional aligners free of charge to correct them.

It’s a sensible structure that removes the guesswork and the temptation to put off getting a new retainer when the old one wears out.

Retention as part of your wider dental health

Let’s step back and seeing retention for what it is: not an inconvenience tacked onto the end of Invisalign but part of a broader commitment to looking after your teeth.

Straight teeth are easier to clean. Regular check-ups catch small problems before they become expensive ones. Hygiene appointments support gum health which, as we’ve seen, directly affects tooth stability. These things are connected and it makes sense to us to approach and treat them that way.

Invisalign straightens your teeth. Retention, good oral hygiene, and regular care keep them that way.

Five things to know before you finish treatment

  1. Wear your retainer 22 hours a day for the first six months after treatment – the same commitment as your aligners.
  1. After six months, wear it every night. This isn’t temporary. It’s permanent.
  1. Retainers need replacing roughly every year – factor this in when you think about the long-term cost of keeping your smile straight.
  1. If you notice any movement in your teeth, contact Smile9 straight away. The sooner it’s caught, the easier – and cheaper – it is to fix.
  1. Staying on top of your check-ups and hygiene appointments isn’t just good dental practice. It’s part of protecting your Invisalign results.
